Yesterday was a long day, but a good day. We got to tour Seattle a bit on our seven hour layover there and then got on the plane for the 11 hour flight. Flying that long is much more fun when you are sitting in business class! We arrived in Beijing last night around 10:00pm here (that's 10:00am in Atlanta). Due to a mix-up regarding our flight arrival time, the car that was supposed to be waiting for us wasn't. Not a happy moment, but if that's as bad as things get, we are a-ok. The tour desk at the airport helped find us another car, so all's well that ends well.
Today, we toured the Forbidden City, the palace where a number of Chinese emperors lived before being overthrown, and Tiananmen Square, which is right out front. It was hot as blazes and uber crowded. The police presence in the Square was as big as you would probably imagine given its history - we had to go through security just to walk to the square. It's just a big open place with huge movie screens showing scenes of idyllic China. Andy liked it. I was hungry. Tomorrow we're headed to tour the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. Here's hoping the tour guide shows up! We'll try to post some pictures soon.
